Silicosis Risk For Young Workers

A sudden rise in silicosis disease has highlighted a previously unrecognised risk for young workers. Silicosis used to be regarded a lung disease which affected older workers who had been exposed to toxic dust for many years.  But the popularity of artificial stone in the kitchen refurbishment industry seen an increase in silicosis disease among younger workers.

This surge in cases is causing widespread alarm. There have been calls to ban the engineered stone, as well as for silicosis to become a notifiable disease.

If you believe you have a claim for compensation, Jefferies Claims may be able to assist.

What Is Silicosis and the Risks Involved ?

Silicosis is an irreversible lung disease caused by inhaling dust which contains crystalline silica. Artificially engineered stone usually contains very high levels of this silica. Kitchen and bathroom tops throughout the UK are being refurbished with the engineered stone, which is cheaper than marble or granite.

During preparation for installation, the stone is also often ‘dry’ cut and polished with an angle grinder or other hand tools. This amount of dust increases if this process is done without the use of water. Using water helps to suppress the fine dust during the finishing process prior to installation.

Common Symptoms of Silicosis

While crystalline silica can cause a range of respiratory and lung-related illnesses, the most common is silicosis. Silicosis occurs when crystalline silica dust causes an inflammation of the lungs and scarring, causing nodular lesions to appear in the upper part of the lungs. Symptoms include:

  • Weakness and fatigue.
  • Unexpected and serious weight loss.
  • A shortness of breath that occurs when doing even a small amount of exercise.
  • Abnormal and intense sweating while sleeping.
  • Swollen legs.
  • A chronic cough.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Chest pains.
  • A persistent fever.
  • Blue and swollen lips.

The symptoms of silicosis can worsen over time, especially if the illness is not treated early on. Sufferers may struggle to breathe and it may eventually become necessary to use a ventilator to breathe depending upon the severity of the illness.
