Road Rage Attack Results in Compensation Payout

A victim of road rage on a Derby road has been awarded £1,500 in compensation after he was assaulted by a fellow driver in October last year.

The assailant, 40, from Newhall, Derby, narrowly escaped a year-long jail term after he punched another motorist on the A38. The presiding judge ordered a 6-month prison sentence, an 18-month suspension and a compensation for the victim.

According to the prosecutor, the victim said that the assailant was driving dangerously at 50 mph on the outside lane and that he was flashing his lights aggressively at the victim when he tried to get him to slow down.

When the pair approached the roundabout both exchanged heated words and got out of their respective cars. The assailant then punched the victim in the head and he fell to the ground. He later required treatment under anaesthetic to remedy a 1.7cm cut to his lip.

The court heard that the assailant was very sorry for his actions explaining that he had had a ‘moment of madness’.

The judge added that the incident was completely ‘unjustified’ and ‘inexcusable’ and caused a terrible injury.

The defence lawyer said that the assailant was thought of as an easy-going man with good character.
