Star Rating For Staffordshire Maternity Unit

The people of Stafford have received some welcome news concerning the maternity unit at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

The unit, which serves a catchment area of 2.5 million people and has been open for just five years, has been considered one of the safest maternity units in the country, according to the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts.

It was awarded a Level three-star rating and given a score of 49 out of a possible 50, equal only to two other hospitals in the country. The unit is also one of the few NHS services that have consultants on site over the weekend.

Factors Considered In The Assessment

The following factors were considered in the assessment:

  • Staffing levels of midwives, obstetricians and anaesthetists
  • The number of incidents that have occurred
  • The amount of complaints made
  • The level of care given during labour

The report confirmed that babies born in the unit are least likely to come to any harm during delivery. Former patients commenting on the information on Staffs Live said that they had the ‘best of care’ and good breastfeeding support. Another said that the care was like a ‘breath of fresh air’ and that the staff there were supportive and well trained.

Mid-Staffordshire Hospital Dissolution

The news comes following confirmation from Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt that Mid-Staffordshire Hospital will be dissolved and the services will be transferred to other hospitals in the area. He said that people had ‘suffered too much for too long under a system which ignored appalling failures of care in their local hospital’.

Do I Have A Clinical Negligence Claim?

If you have suffered from poor treatment at a hospital and suffered as a result then you could be entitled to personal injury compensation. Medical negligence claims also encompass situations where you have been given a wrong diagnosis; have been harmed during a surgical procedure or if you have been given the incorrect treatment and suffered as a result. In all cases, third party blame must be demonstrated for your case to be successful.
