Investigation Into Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery

Surgeon Suspended From NHS Hospital

Following the suspension of a specialist surgeon, a review into children’s orthopaedic surgery carried out at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge has revealed nine children received a below than expected standard of care. This review was commissioned by Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) NHS Foundation Trust and a much larger scale investigation is set to be launched.

According to media reports, the surgeon who has not yet been named, also carried out procedures on adults. The planned further review is set to assess the treatment given to 700 patients who had planned operations and a further 100 patients who received emergency treatment. The emergency treatments included adults and children.

CUH Chief Executive, Ronald Sinker said in a statement that the initial external review was carried out by an independent expert. This included a number of paediatric hip surgeries over a two-and-a-half-year period.

The initial review found that ‘the outcomes of treatment provided to nine children were below the standard’ expected. The Trust added that the further external review is expected to take some time as all the patients and their families concerned will be contacted. It will investigate whether there was a poorer than expected outcome from treatments given.

Risks of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery

Paediatric orthopaedic surgery carries various risks and medical professionals involved in a child’s care must adhere to the highest standards. When errors occur due to negligence, the consequences can be life-altering.

If a child suffers harm due to diagnostic errors, surgical mistakes, post-operative failures, or lack of informed consent, parents may seek to file a clinical negligence claim. Getting proper legal advice early and gathering the necessary evidence can help ensure accountability and compensation for the harm suffered.

Clinical Negligence Claims For Harm Caused

If you suspect that your child has suffered from negligence with regard to orthopaedic surgery, you may want to find out more about filing a clinical negligence claim. This type of claim can be pursued if you can demonstrate that the healthcare provider’s actions fell below the standard of care and directly caused harm. You would need to show the direct link between the negligence and the harm suffered.

A clinical negligence claim is typically field within three years from the date of the incident, or the date when the harm was discovered. However, for children, the three-year limit does not start until their 18th birthday.
