Asbestos Found In An Altrincham Garden
Global Asbestos Awareness Week 1 – 7 April 2025
A roofing contractor has found himself on the wrong side of the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) after asbestos debris was found in an Altrincham garden, outside Manchester. This happened while an old garage roof was being disposed of during the replacement of old cement roof sheets on three garages.
HSE has confirmed that the contractor breached asbestos safety regulations when a local resident raised a red flag about debris having fallen into their garden. This occurred while the roofing work was being carried out. The HSE opened an investigation and an analysis of the waste showed it contained chrysotile asbestos.
Further to this uncontrolled spread of asbestos in a garden, the HSE inspectors found bags of asbestos waste being stored in front of the garage. This was a publicly accessible area and waste was spilling out onto the ground. This was followed by the discovery of contaminated personal belongings of the residents. They had been stored in three garages.
The area has since been cleaned by a licensed asbestos removal company. The contractor was sentenced with a 12 month community order and ordered to pay a fine of over £3500.
Global Asbestos Awareness Week 1 – 7 April
Global Asbestos Awareness Week is currently being held from 1 – 7 April to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure, which remains an occupational hazard. While there have been worldwide efforts to ban and regulate asbestos use, many people continue to be affected.
Asbestos exposure causes serious diseases, primarily respiratory conditions such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. However, exposure has also been linked to cancers of the larynx, ovaries, and gastrointestinal tract.
Campaigns this week will highlight the need for better workplace safety standards and increase research funding to prevent these diseases in the future.
Why Is Asbestos Dangerous ?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of soft, flexible fibres that are resistant to heat, electricity, and corrosion. Because of these properties, asbestos has been widely used in construction, automotive, and manufacturing industries.
However, despite its usefulness, asbestos poses significant health hazards. Long-term exposure to asbestos fibres can cause life-threatening diseases, making it one of the most hazardous materials known to humans.
Preventing Asbestos Exposure
Given the grave risks associated with asbestos exposure, it is crucial to take preventive measures. Many countries have banned or strictly regulated asbestos use, but it remains a problem in older buildings and products. Homeowners and workers should take the following precautions:
- Avoid disturbing asbestos materials: If asbestos is suspected in a building, it should be left undisturbed unless handled by professionals.
- Proper protective gear: Workers dealing with asbestos should wear specialised masks, gloves, and coveralls to prevent inhalation and contamination.
- Professional asbestos removal: Certified asbestos removal professionals should handle any removal or repair of asbestos-containing materials.
- Regular medical check-ups: Individuals with a history of asbestos exposure should undergo periodic medical screenings for early detection of related diseases.
