Popcorn Lung Claims

While Popcorn Lung has made headlines recently in connection to vaping, Popcorn Lung claims may also be made by industrial workers. This is because it is a risk factor for these workers who are exposed to the chemical, diacetyl.  This chemical can be used in industries such as chemical processing, manufacturing and food flavouring where employees may have prolonged exposure to toxic fumes.

However protective gear such as respirators in the workplace can reduce the risk if you work in an industry where diacetyl or other harmful chemicals are frequently used. Additionally, chemicals such as acetaldehyde, ammonia, chlorine, and nitrogen oxides can also contribute to lung damage.

Scientifically known as bronchiolitis obliterans, Popcorn Lung is a rare but serious lung disease. It causes irreversible damage to the smallest airways in the lungs, called bronchioles. As this condition leads to inflammation and scarring, it results in narrowing the airways and making it difficult for you to breathe.

The term “popcorn lung” originated from an outbreak of lung disease among workers in a microwave popcorn factory. They were exposed to diacetyl, which was used to create a buttery flavour in popcorn. High levels of diacetyl exposure led to severe lung damage, prompting medical research into its effects.

Symptoms and Early Diagnosis

The symptoms of popcorn lung often mimic those of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. They include:

  • Persistent cough (dry or with mucus)
  • Shortness of breath (especially during physical activity)
  • Wheezing
  • Fatigue
  • Chest tightness
  • Unexplained weight loss

Symptoms usually develop gradually but worsen over time. Since the damage is irreversible, early diagnosis and management are very important.

Diagnosis of Popcorn Lung

Diagnosing popcorn lung involves several tests to assess lung function and rule out other respiratory diseases:

  • Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

This test measures how well your lungs are working by assessing airflow and lung capacity.

  • CT Scan or Chest X-Ray

Imaging tests help detect scarring or structural changes in your lungs.

  • Bronchoscopy with Biopsy

A small camera is inserted into your lungs to examine the airways, and a tissue sample may be taken to confirm the presence of Popcorn Lung.
