Inspirational Brain Injury Victim Receives Nomination From Headway UK

A young man from South Tyneside has been acknowledged for his contribution to brain injury charity work by being nominated for a prestigious award by a leading charity, Headway UK.

Paul Belk from South Shields has been shortlisted for Campaigner of the Year at the Headway Annual Awards which will be held at the Dorchester in London.

Brain Injury Caused By Spiked Drink

Paul suffered a brain injury when his drink was spiked during a backpacking trip in Thailand in 2005.

He went into a coma for three months and while in intensive care he was given a 2% chance of survival. When he woke from the coma he was initially paralysed and unable to speak.

He received rehabilitation and over a period of time he regained some control over his limbs and ability to speak. The return of some of his mobility has allowed him the freedom to live an independent life and given him the opportunity to plan on going to university.

Paul’s Charity Work For Brain Injury Victims

Paul helped organise an event last year called the Chase Park Festival made accessible for all. His dad, David said: “He played the festival this year with a group of his support workers and they were actually pretty good.

He joked that the whole family were fighting over who would go with Paul to the event as they all wanted to lunch at the Dorchester.

Speaking about the award nomination Paul said: “It’s fantastic! I can’t put into words my gratitude to Claire for nominating me. I’ve got so much respect for the work Headway does – both locally and nationally.

Against The Odds

Claire Tritton is a community development officer for Headway and spoke about how Paul is ‘living proof’ that there can be life following a brain injury. She described him as an inspiration and says she is thrilled his hard work is being recognised in such a way.
