Late Diagnosis Hospital Cancer Care Led To Woman’s Death

A 48-year-old woman from South Yorkshire has died following a late diagnosis. Her husband and family are still devastated about her premature death and say that had the delayed diagnosis not happened, their relative would have been able to say her final goodbyes.

The woman had gone to hospital on a number of occasions after she began suffering from seizures. Following the first visit, X-Ray scan results were sent to her GP where it was clear there was a tumour on her lungs. Despite the knowledge of this, she was still not given a diagnosis. She experienced the seizures again later the same month where they again saw the tumour, yet they still did not inform the woman of her condition. More seizures followed and she was eventually told she had lung cancer but by this time it had spread to her brain; she died shortly after.

Medical Negligence For Family

The family has since won their clinical negligence claim against the trust after it admitted liability. The family says that if the GP had acted on the test results sooner, she could have survived a few months longer but as it was, her condition went untreated for three months.

Her husband said that not only has the situation left their family heartbroken but it did not allow for his wife to be able to sort out all her affairs before she died and say her goodbyes to people.

On behalf of the Trust, a spokesperson said that it admits that there was a ‘miscommunication’ and this was not acceptable; she added that it would learn from the investigation to ensure a more reliable service in the future.
