Van Driver Dies in Road Traffic Accident

A 54-year-old van driver has been killed in a Derby road traffic accident when his van collided with a lorry.

Firefighters and paramedics were at the scene and both drivers had to be cut free from the vehicles. The road was not opened up again until later on in the afternoon.

Police confirmed that the crash had involved a van and a lorry and both drivers were trapped in the wreckage. The spokesman said: “As a result of the accident the driver of the van suffered fatal injuries.”

The man was declared dead at the scene of the accident on the A52 which was closed by the police until late afternoon. The lorry driver suffered minor injuries.

Second Fatal Road Traffic Accident On

The accident is the second fatal crash to happen on the road in three years. In May 2010 a woman also died at the same junction where her car collided with a lorry.

The scene of the accident was investigated for a number of hours by collision experts.

Community Has Called For More Safety Measures

The accident has sparked calls from local community leaders to look at the safety measures around the road and the junction.

A councillor representing the area said that his sympathies were with the family and friends of the victim. He added: “This is the second fatality at this junction in a little over three years and so I shall be speaking with the council’s head of traffic and transportation, to see if this is something we seriously need to look at in terms of safety.”

He said that he wasn’t sure of how the accident had happened but that he felt some maybe misjudged the speed of the road when pulling out from the junction.
