Yorkshire Surgeon Keeps Working Despite Clinical Negligence Record

A hospital in South Yorkshire has paid around £2 million in compensation for substandard operations carried out by an orthopaedic surgeon who continues to operate.

The surgeon worked at the hospital from 2007 to 2009 with £1 million of the compensation agreed by the hospital for accidents occurring since as early as last summer. Prior to this there but was £1 million paid out in numerous other claims.

The hospital has admitted liability for some of the recent cases brought forward, some of which worth £500,000 in personal injury compensation. A further 85 complaints made against the surgeon have since come to the surface.

Despite being twice referred to the General Medical Council the surgeon is currently working at another hospital in West Yorkshire with the hospital stating that it is satisfied with the situation.

Allegations against the surgeon

  • One victim says her life has been ruined now that she has to depend on a calliper for getting around
  • Giving a patient a fractured pelvis and sciatic with restricted movement
  • Leaving someone with a permanent disability after hip surgery
  • Prematurely discharging a patient
  • Some of the claimants have had to give up work because of the injuries suffered
  • Others are on crutches

The surgeon also practised with the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust where some of the claims are sourced. The organisation said it has no concerns about the surgeon’s practice and that it made rigorous checks regarding employment.

The GMC has not disclosed any information about the surgeon stating that this is private information.
