Symptoms of Myofascial Pain Syndrome
Muscle groups and the body’s soft tissues are primarily affected by myofascial pain syndrome. The disorder can usually be felt as muscle pain with knots beneath the skin known as ‘trigger points’. When these points are pressed it is normal to feel pain in other parts of the body. The main symptoms are:
- Spasms
- Tenderness
- Muscle pain
- Associated depression and behavioural disturbances
- Difficulty sleeping due to pain
The Causes of Myofascial Pain Syndrome
It commonly arises due to overstressed or injured muscles, ligaments or tendons. This is sometimes attributed to an accident or surgery.
A muscle that has been contracted repetitively is susceptible to developing myofascial pain. Jobs or hobbies which involve repetitive motion are major contributors. However, the condition can also be caused by a lack of activity (e.g. a broken arm in a sling).

How can I claim compensation?
A successful compensation claim ensures that the financial burden is alleviated for those with reduced capacity or who are unable to work. You could not only receive compensation for the injury but also recover any loss of earnings that has resulted from the situation. This can also assist you in accessing specialist care and equipment which can help to manage your pain.
Every case is unique and your individual circumstances will need to be discussed to give an accurate indicator of the level of compensation you might receive. However, the figures below are based on previous settlements for chronic pain disorders and offer a rough guide.
Severity of pain disorder |
Potential compensation |
Severe cases with persistent and long-term symptoms that do not subside despite treatment. You pain disorder will impede your ability to work and you may require care/assistance.
|
£33,590 – £50,210 |
Moderate cases where the symptoms are persistent but less serious than above. The impact on your ability to work or carry out day-to-day tasks is less significant.
If a full or near total recovery is made (or expected) after symptoms have persisted for a number of years, you can expect the compensation to lie towards the bottom of the bracket (opposite). If you were vulnerable to the development of a pain disorder within a few years, your compensation will likely also fall within this bracket. |
£16,800 – £30,690 |
