    WHAT IS CONCUSSION?

Concussion is a temporary loss of consciousness or mental function occurring following an injury or blow to the head; it is considered a mild traumatic brain injury. Symptoms of concussion include:

    • Temporary loss of consciousness following the incident
    • Dizziness or imbalance
    • Vomiting or nausea following the incident
    • A headache following the incident
    • Periods of memory loss
    • Impaired vision; including double vision or blurred vision
    • Confusion and/or forgetfulness
    • Feeling drowsy or sluggish
    • Sensitivity to noise or light
    • Slowed reactions

A concussion can be sustained in a wide variety of ways, but usually, it is caused by a blow to the head. This might be caused by a road traffic accident, a knock to the head whilst participating in a sport, a slip, trip or fall where the head hits an object or the floor, or as a result of a violent crime.

Concussion in itself tends to be a fairly minor injury and recovery often doesn’t take more than a few weeks. However, concussion could also be a sign of a much more serious brain injury, which could have a lasting negative impact on health and wellbeing. Sometimes, symptoms do not develop for hours, days or even weeks after the incident. Anyone who has suffered a blow to the head should be carefully monitored for some time afterwards and receive medical attention should any symptoms materialise.

    RECOVERY FROM CONCUSSION

The amount of time it takes for an individual to recover depends on a number of variables. These include the severity of the concussion, the patient’s age and general health, and their previous history of other concussions or head injuries. Most people suffering from a minor concussion can expect to recover within days or weeks.  However, for some people, symptoms and health implications can continue for some time and mean that resuming a normal life is impossible for a period of time.

HOW MUCH COMPENSATION CAN I CLAIM FOR CONCUSSION?

A medical expert will assess all of the evidence to determine the severity of your individual case.

    CONCUSSION COMPENSATION AMOUNTS

    Moderate £6,000 – £20,000
    Minor £3,000– £6,000
    Very Minor £1,000 – £3,000

Please note: the figures above are related to your injury only. If you wish to make a claim for loss of earnings or recover expenses, this figure will be calculated by your solicitor.
